With its unique mid-century modern architecture and new landscaping, the Kensington Pedestrian Bridge is a source of pride for residents of Miraloma, West Portal and St Francis Wood. But until its recent transformation the bridge was covered with graffiti, its pillars choked with ivy and the open space was a tangled mess of bushes, dead trees and debris.
The success of this project is a tribute to the vision and dedication of our residents and the city’s Department of Urban Forestry. The process took time, funding and commitment.
The city power-washed the bridge, removed the dead trees and bushes, provided access to water at the site, purchased and planted new landscaping and painted the bridge span. Residents raised funds to pay tor the artwork on the 5 pillars, painted the stairs, repaired the fence and weeded, pruned, swept and removed graffiti on neighborhood work days.
While neighborhood work days will continue and the city continues to provide water for the plants and remove dead branches/trees, adequate maintenance for landscaping is a concern.
If you appreciate the value this project brings to our community, please consider making a generous tax-deductible donation. 100% of all donations will be used to hire a landscaping maintenance company so the Kensington Bridge remains a source of pride for everyone living in West Portal, Miraloma and St Francis Wood.
